Local authorities

Solar photovoltaic electricity is an opportunity for local authorities to implement a proactive renewable energy policy while adding value to their land or real estate assets.

Because of its flexibility and its capacity to be deployed close to the end-consumers, solar photovoltaic energy provides a compelling response to local authorities wanting to exercise their competence in the field of energy policy. Solar energy is in perfect line with the decentralisation policy of many countries aiming to generate electricity close to the consumption point.

The construction and operation of solar photovoltaic power plants represents an important local economic activity; it creates jobs and it offers a considerable tax income for a town, a department or a region. However, the benefits of a solar power plant go well beyond the purely economic aspects: public places (town halls, schools) can be equipped, for educational purposes, with digital monitors displaying real-time production data and the CO2 emissions reductions. The power plants could also be visited on school outings to raise awareness on environment and energy issues.

In partnership with SOVAFIM, GÉNÉRALE DU SOLAIRE has assisted many local authorities, towns, departments and regions in France, in implementing their solar photovoltaic power plant projects. For example, the joint venture created by SOVAFIM and GÉNÉRALE DU SOLAIRE has equipped the roofs of several public educational institutions with solar power plants, such as: 15 secondary schools in the Rhône-Alpes region, 5 secondary schools in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, 8 colleges in the Vaucluse department, a school and an after-school gymnasium in Laragne-Montéglin (Hautes Alpes), etc. It has also developed several ground mounted photovoltaic power plants on land belonging to (or being administered by) local authorities in Pujaut (Gard), Sourdun (Seine-et-Marne), Belvezet (Gard), Lapalud (Vaucluse), ou Escales (Aude).
