What are the different types of ground-mounted solar power plants?
Solar panels in ground-mounted photovoltaic power plants can be installed in two ways:
- Either on fixed structures, tilted towards the south at an angle that depends on the latitude,
- Or on mobile structures known as ‘trackers’, which pivot on one or two axes, allowing the solar panels to remain permanently oriented towards the sun from morning until night.
In both cases, the structures are spaced apart to avoid any shading that could be harmful to photovoltaic production.
Eco-grazing and co-activity
Ground mounted photovoltaic power plants are compatible with other possible land uses, such as agricultural activities. For instance, solar power plants can be at the disposal of the neighboring farmers to accommodate their livestock.
GÉNÉRALE DU SOLAIRE plans to install a herd of sheep at each of its power plants, where the land is suitable, which have a real added value to the maintenance of the plant, as they prevent the growing grass from creating shades on the panels close to the ground. The sheep are used to maintain a low grass level, replacing therefore motor devices which would be more costly from an economic and environmental point of view.
